Private Vices? We can not become public virtues

Pierre Chiartano in his book Defending the West a summarized our conversation in which I argued that we must reintroduce the concept of virtue, because a democratic society only works if you have a solid moral foundation. From the Anglo-Saxon culture we got the idea that private vices (such as greed, ambition and even envy) may become public virtues to stimulate the economic and political competition. But this happens only in companies that have strict ethics as private and public communities of New England. In Italy, where the public ethic is almost non-existent, private vices become immediately public services and corruption. The ills of our society can be cured either with simple majority or change the law. The law itself is nothing without solid ethical roots. In the 90 judges have tried to replace morality with the law, but it was a disaster.
